Tenerife Opera Festival. Nabucco.

The Tenerife Opera has just started and this weekend we can enjoy the famous opera Nabucco by Giuseppe Verdi.

Nabucco is a lyrical tragedy based on the biblical story of King Nebuchadnezzar, with music by Giuseppe Verdi and libretto by Temistocle Solera. It was premiered at the Scala in Milan on 9 March 1842 and was the composer’s first major triumph, leading to a period of frenzied activity—seventeen operas in twelve years. The success is partly due to the musical qualities of the work and partly to the public’s association between the history of the Israelites and the nationalistic ambitions of the period. One of the symbols used to support the ideal of independence was the chorus of the Hebrew slaves, Va pensiero, undoubtedly the most popular song of this opera.
