This week Tenerifehas been playing host to scores of European tour operators and golf journalists participating in the Gastronomic Tenerife International Golf Challenge 2012, seeking to promote the island as a golf destination, organized by Turismo de Tenerife the successful event concludes on Saturday.
Tenerife Minister for Tourism, Carlos Alonso, explained that “this time we wanted to promote a tournament to be held in addition to the Tenerife Ladies Open, to foster not only playing golf, for which we will showcase our magnificent golf courses, but to enjoy the complementary offer to the golfer, the island’s varied cuisine.”
Participants are taking part in tournaments at Amarilla Golf, Abama Golf and Golf Las Americas and will enjoy traditional Canarian delicacies such as wine, fruit, cheese and potatoes.
In 2011 green fees on the island, totalled 293,884 euros an increase of 14.3 percent compared to 2010. The best results were obtained during the first two quarters, with increases of 18.2 percent and 19.1 percent respectively. Thus, in the first quarter 113,097 green fees, 50,726 in the second, 40,290 in the third and 89,771 in the fourth quarter.
According to data analyzed by the research department of Tenerife Tourism Corporation, theIslandgolfer is an average age of 48.1 years, 3.3 years higher than the average visitor. Their average household income is 30.7 percent higher than the average traveler who visitsTenerife.
