Dog Kennels in Tenerife

We love dogs at Clear Blue Skies SL, and have a few of our own who are extended members of the “Clear Blue family”.  For that reason, we are often asked by clients who are moving to Tenerife (or those already here) if we can recommend somewhere for their best furry buddy to stay when they are away from time to time.  Dog owners are often understandably anxious about leaving their beloved pets in kennels, particularly unfamiliar kennels in Tenerife, and trial and error isn’t really an option, as we know from our own experience.  A few years ago, we were fortunate enough to discover a Belgian lady called Christel and her Canarian husband, Manuel who were running a dog hotel not too far from the Abama resort in Guia de Isora in south-west Tenerife.IMG_2066
We were looking for a kennel to look after our two cocker spaniels and my parents two dogs, having had a couple of disappointing experiences with other kennels in Tenerife.  As soon as we arrived and met Christel, who speaks perfect English, we knew there was something different about this place.  It was immediately apparent that Christel and Manuel just exude love for all of the dogs they care for, they knew their personalities and quirky little ways inside out, and nothing seemed to be too much trouble for them. We, and our dogs, soon witnessed for ourselves that they genuinely have a place in their hearts for every dog that comes into their dog hotel.  The fact that they care for the same dogs year after year speaks volumes about the confidence and comfort owners feel when leaving their pets with Christel and Manuel.

On many occasions, before our dog’s medical condition eventually got the better of him, Christel and Miguel would identify that Zak wasn’t looking his normal self, and would take our little guy from his kennel to sleep indoors with them where they could keep a close eye on him.  On a couple of occasions when he had a bad turn, they thought nothing of one of them making the half hour journey in the middle of the night to our vet to get him emergency care.  If that isn’t love and dedication, I don’t know what is.  Zak went to the doggy playground in the sky almost four years ago now, but despite hundreds of dogs passing through their doors since then, Christel still lovingly recalls in great detail his funny stories and mischievous ways.

Anyway, things have changed significantly since our first meeting with Christel and Manuel; after years of red tape and wrangling with authorities, Christel and Manuel were able to realise their dream of taking a plot of land in the hillside of Alcala and turning it into the best dog hotel in Tenerife.  They, as usual, put the dogs first, creating incredible kennels with huge, outdoor, partly covered runs laid with artificial dog-friendly grass and enormous wooden beach hut kennels.  Some kennels were intentionally left with dirt floors as, in Manuel and Christel’s experience, some dogs enjoy and benefit from a little digging around and they felt it was important that they were not deprived of this natural activity.

The exercise areas comprise a fully enclosed landscaped walking area, with lots to sniff and see, and a large open space for ball games and interaction.  All dogs are exercised properly and appropriately according to the weather conditions.  There is also a dedicated room adjacent to Christel and Miguel’s own bedroom for dogs, like our old pal Zak, who need a bit of extra TLC and a closer eye, or maybe just a little air conditioning to give them a break from the Tenerife climate.  Christel can even give your dog a little tidy-up on the grooming table before they come home, giving you one less thing to deal with on your return. The kennels are located around half an hour’s drive from Costa Adeje, and it really is worth the drive to see the place (even just to admire the unbelievably beautiful view) but Manuel will arrange to collect and drop your dog off if it is easier for you.

We love Christel and Manuel, and our dogs love, and loved, them.  They do say that humans should strive to be the person their dog thinks they are, and, well, we think Christel and Manuel have succeeded.  To view or book your dog into the kennels, call Christel on 00 34 666 794 080.
