My holidays in South Tenerife (I)

This year I had different members of my family and some friends coming to Tenerife during the summer, so instead of going somewhere else, this summer I decided to join them and have my holidays where I live, in sunny and beautiful Tenerife.

We had great time. Where do I start? I took two weeks off, last week of July and first week of August. Weather was absolutely fantastic, not too warm and always sunny.

First of all we enjoyed a couple of days in El Médano, relaxing on the beach and enjoying the wonderful food. El Médano is a fishing village a bit out of the main resorts of Los Cristianos and Las Américas but worthy the visit. It has a lovely family sandy beach and not deep shore where children can play and swim securely. El Médano has received the prestigious Blue Flag: there are plenty of sunbeds to rent (only 2 € for the whole day) as well as a parasols, and it offers showers, lifeguard service and mobility bikes for disable swimmers. All this only a few steps from great coffee bars and restaurants. There are always lots of things going on in El Médano beach. In the morning you can see and join free aquarobics for elder people and in the afternoon groups of teenagers practice capoeira, but all the time it is a busy beach with local families together with holiday makers.

There is a wooden path to walk parallel to this long beach all along with coffee bars and shops until we get to the the surfers area, with their own theme bars and shops. This is an ideal place to practice bodysurfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and much more.

There are some professional companies working there organizing courses for novels or advanced surfers. Every year El Medano hosts a World Kite Championship. During my time off a World Windsurf Championship was taking place. Great sea and wind conditions and brilliant atmosphere. Really exciting!!

And after the beach it is time  for something to eat. El Médano offers a great choice of local food (fish and seafood) an also all types of international cuisine (chinese, italian, british, french, vegetarian…). Our favorite choice always is the area of Playa Chica, a little fishing bay where there are a few small restaurants offering local food.

There is a brand new restaurant opened this year, right in front of the sea: “El imperio del pintxo” which has become very popular. Excellent quality, great selection of good wines and fair prices make you feel like a millionaire, eating next to the sea.

At the end of the day you can walk along the beach path enjoying the sunset and why not, you can stop at one of the good cocktail bars in front of the sea for a mojito or a champagne cocktail.
